ENGINEERING STANDARDS AND PRACTICES
PIPE INSULATION

2.3.3

MAXIMUM THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AS PER ASTM C547

The thermal conductivity shall not exceed the following:

BTU in./ft2°F (W/m K)

Mean temperature

0.25 (0.036)

100°F (38°C)

2.3.4

MAXIMUM NON-FIBROUS (SHOT) CONTENT:

The percentage of non-fibrous material (shot) shall not exceed 20% by weight.

2.3.5

WATER VAPOR SORPTION:

The water vapor sorption shall be less than 1% by weight.

2.3 6

STRESS CORROSION:

The material must not promote or contribute to the corrosion of austenitic stainless steel.

2.3.7

pH:

The pH of the material shall be between 7 and 9.5.

2.3.7

SURFACE BURNING CHARACTERISTICS:

Shall not exceed
Flame Spread 5 Smoke Developed 0

APPROVED MANUFACTURE (S): FIBREX INSULATIONS, INC.
Single or multiple layer - COREPLUS 1200 PIPE INSULATION.

2.4

BELOW GRADE

The pipe insulation shall be premolded and core formed.

A thermal calculation should be performed to determine the proper insulation thickness to ensure either personnel protection or process control. Where the insulation thickness exceeds 3", a multiple layer system is recommended.

Pipe insulation is not intended for use in direct bury applications.

2.4.1

COMPOSITION:

Basalt wool and organic binder which is non-combustible and asbestos free.

2.4.2

DENSITY:

The density to be between 6.8 and 8.6 pcf.

2.4.3

MAXIMUM THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY:

The thermal conductivity shall not exceed the following as per ASTM C547

BTU in./ft2°F (W/m K)

Mean temperature

0.37 (0.053)

300°F (149°C)

0.45 (0.065)

400°F (204°C)

0.54 (0.078)

500°F (260°C)

0.59 (0.086)

600°F (316°C)

0.77 (0.111)

700°F (371°C)
